The Bibliographic Commission of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Lviv (1909–1939): Directions and Principles of Activity

Abstract

The monograph examines the history of the establishment, the organizational aspects of operation, and the main areas of activity of the Bibliographic (from 1934, Bibliological) Commission of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Lviv (1909–1939). Its membership included prominent scholars, librarians, and bibliographers, among them Mykhailo Vozniak, Volodymyr Hnatiuk, Mykhailo Hrushevskyi, Volodymyr Doroshenko, Ivan Kalynovych, Ivan Krevetskyi, Ivan Krypiakevych, Mykhailo Komarov, Zenon Kuzelia, Ivan Omelianovych Levytskyi, Yevhen Yulii Pelenskyi, Ilarion Sventsitskyi, Ivan Franko, and others.

For an analytical examination of the Commission’s work in the fields of retrospective and current bibliography, a substantial corpus of printed and archival materials has been employed. This has made it possible to synthesize the achievements of previous years, to bring to light new facts, to introduce previously unknown documents into scholarly circulation, and ultimately to present a more comprehensive and systematized account of this scholarly center.
